Ian made his senior international debut for Ireland against Wales in the Celtic Cup in 2004. His first major selection was to the European Nations Trophy in Rome in 2005 with further selections occurring for the World Cup Qualification Tournament in China in 2006; European Championships in Manchester in 2007; and Olympic Games Qualification Tournament in 2008. Ian currently has 90 caps and scored 1 goal.

Ian has won the European Hockey League in 2008; U18 European Championships in 2002; European Trophy in 2005; and five Ulster Premiership titles.

In the summer of 2008 Ian decided to retire from the Irish international squad to pursue an international career with Great Britain. His aim is selection for the Olympic Games in 2012 and the attainment of a medal at that event.

Ian plays hockey professionally in Holland with HGC.
