As a college we are very proud that Amy McNamara 10WS got selected onto the Belfast Squad during the 2010-2011 season. Below is a report about her experience.

On Wednesday 16th March 2011 I attended a hockey trial for the Belfast U15 squad at CIYMS pitches. We worked through a variety of drills and I was fortunate enough to get through to the next trial which resulted in me receiving a place in the squad. We attended a few training sessions in preparation for the hockey tournament where we would play other regions across Northern Ireland. The tournament was on the 29th March which didn’t give us much time to train together.

The tournament was held at Lisnagarvy hockey club and we arrived at 9:30 for our first match at 10:15am. Our team was in group A and every team would play two matches within their group with the winners from each group progressing through to the semi-final.

Our first match was against North East. We beat them 1-0 which lifted our team’s spirits. We had a short rest before our next match which was against South East, who we also defeated 1-0. These two great scores put us into the semi-final after winning our group.

We then played a tough match against group B’s runner up, which was a very even game and we ended with a tight draw of 0-0 which then led to penalty strokes which we won due to the excellent skills of our goal keeper and of the 5 girls who took the strokes in our team. This put us through to the final where we would played a tough match against the South squad who had previously won all their matches.

Before the whistle blew for the match to begin the names and positions of the players in both squads were individually called out.The match was very even but our Belfast team managed to slip a goal past their skilled goal keeper towards the end. Within the last two minutes of the game the South received a short corner as the whistle blew but they still had to take it. It was a chance for them to regain a place in the game and even the scores, but thankfully our strong defence were able to clear the ball from entering our goals.

David Marshall has been selected for the Ulster U18 Schools Inter-Provincial Summer Training Squad in Rugby. David played in two trial matches against RS Armagh and Campbell College and was selected for the squad which was a terrific achievement for the back row forward.

On the 17th October, 20 pupils and staff had the opportunity through the Darren Clarke Golf League to play the K Club, Co Kildare. An enjoyable day was had by all involved with the skills of even the lowest handicap players being tested by such a demanding course.

We look forward in anticipation to the next planned golf outing to the Loch Erne in May.
