French Breakfast for year 8
All of year 8 had the opportunity to enjoy a French breakfast in the canteen to celebrate European Day of Languages.
Croissants and pains au chocolat were washed down with chocolat chaud.

All pupils study French in Years 8 -10.
Spanish is taught in Years 9 - 10
The programme of study at KS3 for both languages adheres to the statutory requirements of the Northern Ireland revised curriculum. Topic areas covered include everyday activities, personal life and social relationships and the world around us.
All pupils are required to learn at least one modern foreign language. The programme of study covers 4 contexts: My World, Holiday time and travel, Work and Lifestyle and The Young Person in Society.
The examining board is AQA
Listening, speaking and reading skills are assessed at either foundation or higher level. Writing is assessed through coursework.
Each skill area is worth 25%.
CCEA GOML German
Whilst this is not a GCSE, it is a publicly recognized and accredited exam course. It is offered as part of the Sixth Form enrichment programme.
Course description
This course aims to develop the pupil's ability to understand and use German effectively for purposes of practical communication. Topics covered are Myself and Others, My Locality, Travel and Holidays, Continuing Education.
Assessment
The course is presented in levels with assessment in speaking, listening, reading and writing at the end of each level. The content of each successive level will build upon what has already been learned. It is hoped that pupils will have attained Level 3 by the end of the 2-year course.

Course Description
This course builds on GCSE Higher Level in the 4 skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening. It has been designed as a suitable foundation for further study and/or practical use of the target language. It also allows students to gain a cultural understanding of the countries where the target language is spoken.
There are three distinct learning contexts:
Relationships, Health and Lifestyle, Young People in Society
Assessment Format
- AS 1: Speaking - approx 13 minutes
This unit consists of two elements
1. a prepared presentation
2. a general conversation
- AS 2: Listening, Reading and Writing - 2hr 45
This unit consists of three sections, including translation from the target language into English and one responsive writing essay of 200-250 words.
Assessment Format
- A2 1: Speaking - approx 15 minutes
This unit consists of two elements:
- A discussion based on a societal theme chosen by the candidate - 5 minutes
- A general converstation - 10 minutes
- A2 2: Listening - 35 minutes (Followed by a 15 minute break)
- Reading and Writing - 2 hours and 25 minutes
The writing section is an essay question of 300 - 350 words based on three literary titles.
